Poon Hill Trekking – 7 Days

The Poon Hill Trek offers great sunrise and sunset views that rise up through the huge Annapurna Himalayan range. 
It’s  is rated “easy” but provides a challenge as you reach 3,190m. Admire views of Annapurna I (8,091m), Annapurna South, (7,219m), Gangapurn (7,455m-), Annapurna III (7,555m), Machhapuchhre -Fihtail at (6,997m), Manaslu (8,163m), and the Dhaulagiri range . These majestic snowy peaks rise from the rolling green hills and valleys.

drive  trip begins with a 141 kilometre drive by tourist coach to the"City of Lakes’’, Pokhara.followed by a drive to Nayapul the starting point of the trek. Pass through charming farming villages with terraced fields. Enjoy the sight of beautiful waterfalls that dive gracefully dow hillsides.

The altitude reached on the Poon Hill trek heights aremoderate, and most people should be able to manage the trek. There are frequent downhill sections and winding paths that are The comfortable on the body. Crossing a few striking suspension bridges adds to the adventure.

Following a steady climb, we reach Ghorepani village with its blue houses, where you find cosy colourful teahouses for trekkers. Ghorepani was , originally spelled “Ghodepani”, meaning "Horse water". This is where the mules, caravans and horses stopped for water on this famous route. Ghorepani offers terrific views of the world’s seventh highest mountain, Dhaulagiri (meaning “Beautiful White Mountain”) at 8,167 metres.

Well before dawn, we rise for a onehour hike uphill through rhododendron, pine and fir forest. We must reach Poon Hill as early as possible. From atop the hill, get a stunning 360º view of all the snowcapped, mountains and a fantastic sunrise. This is what the Poon Hill Trek  is all about.

Trip Itinerary:

Day 01: Kathmandu to Pokhara: 
Drive to Pokhara from Kathmandu. Stay overnight in Pokhara at a hotel.

Day 02: Pokhara to Tikhedhunga (1577m):
About 45 kms drive from Pokhara via Naudanda, Kande, and Lumle village up to Nayapul. From where the trail descends steeply to Birethanti and follows the east bank of Bhurungdi Khola. Lunch will be served at Ramghai .Finally reach Tikhedhunga. Stay overnight at Tikhedhunga at a teahouse. Walking distance is 5 hours.

Day 03: Tikhedhunga to Ghorepani (2855m):
The trail ascends to Ulleri village through rhododendron forests . Arrive at the top of Ghorepani pass and stay overnight at a teahouse. Walking distance is 6 hours.

Day 04: Ghorepani – Poon Hill (3210m) – Tadapani (2650m.):
The guide will wake you up early for the 6-hour walk up to Tadapani via Poon Hill. Poon Hill is one of the best sunrise viewpoints in Nepal. Stay overnight at Tadapani at a teahouse. Walking distance is 6 hours.

Day 05: Tadapani to Ghandruk (1,960m):
This area is amongh the trekking areas of Nepal. The Annapurna range and Machhapuchre (Fishtail) dominates the skyline and farther east  you can glimpse Lamjung Himal and the Manaslu range. The trial descends through huge boulders into the maze of trails around Ghandruk. Stay overnight at Ghandruk at a teahouse. Walking distance is 4 hours.

Day 06: Ghandruk to Pokhara via Birethanti (1040m):
Descending to Pokhara via Birethanti one can see mules loaded with goods en route. Walking distance is 5 hrs. Continue walking up to Nayapul and drive to Pokhara for two hours.
Day 07: Pokhara to Kathmandu: 
Drive  back to Kathmandu.

How hard is Poon Hill Trek?
The Poon Hill trek is considered one of the easiest short treks in Nepal, and can be done by young and old, novice or experienced trekkers. The Poon Hill trek only consists of 5 days of light hiking, although there are some more challenging sections. 

How far is the Poon Hill from Pokhara?
Poon Hill is 35 kilometers  from Pokhara to Poon Hill. A 45-minute drive from Pokhara takes you up to Nayapul, the starting point of the trek. 

How far is Poon Hill from Ghandruk?
Ghandrukis 8-10 hours on foot from Poon Hill or about two days walk.

You can see many mountains from Poon Hill. To the east you can see the famous fishtail mountain, Mt Machhapuchhare 6,993m,in the center are Annapurna South, Hinchuli, Annapurna III, and Dhampus Peak to the west is Daulaghiri.
