Mount Kailash via Korala: The Forbidden Gateway to the Divine

For the soul-seeking traveler, the Mount Kailash Tour via Korala Border is not just a pilgrimage—it is the ultimate Himalayan odyssey. While most routes to the "Abode of Shiva" involve crowded borders, the Korala gateway offers an exclusive path through the mystical Upper Mustang, connecting the "Forbidden Kingdom" of Lo Manthang directly to the sacred Tibetan plateau.

Why Choose the Korala Route in 2026?

This itinerary is the "connoisseur’s choice." You don’t just visit Kailash; you traverse the rain-shadow landscapes of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges before crossing the newly opened Korala Border (4,660m). It is a journey that blends the ancient Buddhist heritage of Mustang with the primordial spiritual power of Mount Kailash (6,638m) and the sapphire waters of Lake Mansarovar.

The Experience: Beyond the Ordinary

  • The Upper Mustang Prelude: Spend days exploring the red-cliff canyons and "Sky Caves" of Lo Manthang. This provides perfect, gradual acclimatization before hitting the high Tibetan altitudes.

  • The Sacred Parikrama: Complete the legendary 52km Kora around Mount Kailash, crossing the formidable Dolma La Pass (5,630m)—a transition believed to wash away the sins of a lifetime.

  • Spiritual Rebirth at Mansarovar: Experience a ritual dip in the world’s highest freshwater lake, where the reflections of the "Sun and Moon" lakes (Mansarovar and Rakshas Tal) symbolize the balance of the universe.

Mount Kailash & Mansarovar: The 10-Day Korala Odyssey

Day 01: Kathmandu to Pokhara (The Gateway)

Your journey begins with a scenic drive or a 25-minute flight to the lakeside city of Pokhara. Enjoy the reflection of Machhapuchhre in Phewa Lake as you prepare for the forbidden kingdom ahead.

Day 02: Pokhara to Jomsom & Kagbeni

A short, thrilling flight between the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri massifs lands you in Jomsom. Drive to Kagbeni, the gateway to Upper Mustang, and explore the ancient "wind-tunnel" village.

Day 03: The Mustang Trail to Lo Manthang

Traverse the high-altitude desert of Upper Mustang. Wind through red-rock canyons and past "Sky Caves" until you reach the walled city of Lo Manthang, the medieval capital of Mustang.

Day 04: Crossing the Korala Border to Saga

An early start takes you to the Korala Border (4,660m). After seamless immigration, enter Tibet and drive across the vast Tibetan Plateau to Saga, crossing the holy Brahmaputra River.

Day 05: Saga to Lake Mansarovar (The First Glimpse)

The longest drive of the trip but the most rewarding. Traverse the Mayum La Pass (5,211m) for your first breathtaking view of Lake Mansarovar and the distant spire of Mount Kailash.

Day 06: Spiritual Bliss at Mansarovar & Drive to Darchen

Spend the morning performing rituals or meditating at the shores of Mansarovar. In the afternoon, take a 40km drive to Darchen, the bustling base camp for the Kailash Kora.

Day 07: Kora Day 1: Darchen to Dirapuk (The North Face)

Start the sacred trek. An easy 13km walk brings you to Dirapuk Monastery. As the sun sets, witness the golden "North Face" of Mount Kailash, widely considered the most majestic view of the peak.

Day 08: Kora Day 2: The Dolma La Challenge to Zuthulpuk

The most physically demanding and spiritually significant day. Climb to Dolma La Pass (5,630m), the highest point of the journey. Descend past the emerald Gauri Kund (Lake of Compassion) to reach Zuthulpuk.

Day 09: Final Kora Leg & Drive back to Saga

A gentle 6km trek completes the 52km circuit. Our vehicle meets you at the trek end point for a drive back to Saga. Celebrate your achievement with a warm meal and a rest.

Day 10: Retracing the Path: Saga to Kathmandu

We retrace our steps back to the border, descending from the high plateau to the lush valleys of Nepal. Final transfer back to Kathmandu, where your legendary pilgrimage concludes.

Essential Preparation for 2026

1. The "Mustang First" Acclimatization

The biggest advantage of the Korala route is the gradual climb through Upper Mustang.

  • The Golden Rule: Spend at least 2 nights in Lo Manthang (3,840m) before crossing the border.

  • Hydration: Drink 3–4 liters of water daily. Avoid alcohol and caffeine as you approach the Korala Border (4,660m) and the Dolma La Pass (5,630m).

2. Tibet Visa & Passport Logistics

  • China Group Visa: This is a special paper visa issued in Kathmandu. We require your original passport for at least 3 working days before the trip starts.

  • Indian Passport Holders: The process is managed by the China India Pilgrimage Service Center (CIPSC) and has different fee structures and group requirements. Please contact us for the specific 2026 Indian Yatra protocols.

3. Currency & Connectivity

  • Cash is King: While you can use Nepali Rupees (NPR) in Mustang, you must have Chinese Yuan (RMB) for Tibet. ATMs are non-existent during the Kora. Budget approx. USD $300–$400 in Yuan for personal snacks, horse rentals, or extra WiFi.

  • The Great Firewall: Most Western social media (WhatsApp, Facebook, Google) is blocked in Tibet. Download a VPN before leaving your home country if you need to stay connected.

4. Physical Fitness: The 3-Month Plan

The 52km Kailash Kora is a test of endurance.

  • Cardio: Start jogging, swimming, or cycling 3–5 times a week at least 3 months before departure.

  • Leg Strength: Focus on squats and lunges.

  • Simulate: If possible, go on a few day-hikes wearing the boots you intend to use for the Kora.

Quick FAQ for the Korala Route

  • Is there an age limit? Officially, the range for the Tibet permit is 18 to 70 years old. Travelers over 65 may require a medical fitness certificate to be approved for the high-altitude pass.

  • Can I rent a horse for the Kora? Yes. If you feel the 52km walk is too much, horses and porters can be hired at Darchen for the 3-day circuit. This must be arranged on Day 1 of the Kora.

  • What is the "Khumbu Cough" equivalent? In the dry, dusty plains of Tibet, many trekkers get a dry throat. Buffs or face masks are essential to breathe filtered air and keep your throat moist.

  • Is the border always open? The Korala border is a seasonal trade and tourism point. It is typically most stable from May to October. We monitor border status daily and will inform you of any diplomatic or weather-related shifts.
