Embark on one of Nepal’s classical treks, the Everest Classic trekking also known as the old Everest Base Camp trekking route or the Jiri to Everest Base Camp trek. The Jiri to Everest trek has been preferred by many hardcore trekkers from decades ago. It was believed to be the original route to Everest. Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay also embarked on their quest to climb Mount Everest from this trail as well. Starting from Jiri, which lies in the Dolakha district of Nepal, this Jiri to Everest trek takes you deep into the hills, forest, gorges and river banks leading directly to the barren rocky lands where Everest Base Camp is waiting! Jiri is the home of an ethnic group called the Jirels and Sherpa. It is one of the classic treks of Nepal which provides an opportunity to experience a true and authentic Sherpa culture with spectacular views of the Everest range. Furthermore, if you decide to trek the Jiri to EBC trek during December up to May you can skip a few first days on the dusty roads by taking a local transport up to Khari Khola. Don’t hesitate and book the Everest Classic trekking today with Encountersnepal.com.
This adventurous trek takes you to the beautiful views of magnificent Himalayas and Mountains along with many beautiful rivers and cultural villages. You’ll get opportunities to observe the local lifestyle of the Sherpa people and their unique culture and traditions. With Encountersnepal.com’s trekking team we’ll make sure that you get the Himalayan knowledge of the area and the locals!
What is the normal route of the Everest Classic trek in Nepal?
Beginning from Kathmandu, we drive straight towards Bhandara via Jiri. You can alternatively take a domestic flight from Kathmandu to Phalpu. We begin our trek normally from Jiri towards Namche Bazaar and then straight to Everest Base Camp through woods, valleys, rivers and rocky terrain. Along the way we encounter different Buddhist Monasteries and cultural villages of the Sherpa people. We trek across the Lamjura High Mountain Pass which offers a fabulous perspective of towering snowcapped peaks. In the first week of our journey, we pass through different beautiful terraced farmlands, classic middle-hill countryside along with various green forests. We’ll have ample time in order to acclimatize while encountering the culture and tradition of the friendly and hospitable Hindu and Buddhists communities. We spend our every overnight in a lodge or if available a hotel. The trekking period through Kala Patthar gives views of Mt. Kala Patthar with the beautiful glimpse of Mt. Everest in the background. While returning back from the trek, we follow the same route of Gorakshep and Kala Patthar to reach Namche Bazaar. We reach Lukla and take a flight back to Kathmandu where our trek ends.

FAQ: Top 10 for Everest Classic Trekking

  2. How long does the Everest Classic Trekking take? Typically 18 to 22 days, depending on your starting point (Jiri or Phaplu) and your pace.

  3. How difficult is the trek from Jiri to Everest Base Camp? It is considered "Challenging." It involves more "ups and downs" and a longer duration than the Lukla fly-in route, requiring good physical stamina.

  4. What is the highest point reached during the trek? The highest point is Kala Patthar at 5,545m (18,192 ft) for the best view of Mt. Everest.

  5. Do I need special permits for this route? Yes, you need the Sagarmatha National Park Permit, the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit, and a Gaurishankar Conservation Area Permit (if starting from Jiri).

  6. What is the best time for the Everest Classic Trek? Spring (March–May) for blooming rhododendrons and Autumn (September–November) for the clearest mountain views.

  7. Is altitude sickness a risk? Yes, but the Classic route offers better acclimatization than flying to Lukla because you gain elevation more gradually over several days.

  8. What kind of accommodation is available? We stay in traditional mountain teahouses, providing twin-sharing rooms and warm dining areas.

  9. What should I pack for a 20-day trek? Key items include broken-in trekking boots, a -15°C sleeping bag, down jacket, moisture-wicking layers, and water purification tablets.

  10. Why choose the Jiri route over Lukla? It’s less crowded, culturally richer, provides superior physical conditioning, and avoids the uncertainty of Lukla flight cancellations.
