Chulu East climbing Essentially, there are two Chulu Peaks- Chulu East and Chulu West. Chulu East (6059m) with its wonderful panorama of embracing the Annapurna Himalayan range captivates you. Chulu East peak soars from the North of the Marsyangdi Khola which lies in the Manang region as well as from division of the Manang Himal which is incorporated in the bigger Damodar Himal. Chulu East lets you witness the breathtaking sights of the Annapurna range II, III, IV, Glacier Dome, Gangapurna, Tilicho Peak, Dhaulagiri and Manaslu. This remote high land region located to the North and in a rain shade is shaped by the Annapurna Himal. Encounter Nepal takes you to Chulu East peak climbing all the way from a rarely visited trail and present a memorable trekking holiday.
Chulu East’s path moves up the Marsyangdi which is rather quick and entails no huge elevation. Trekkers should be acquainted with the equipment like crampons, ice axe, harness, tying knots and managing climbing ropes. Also, you have to be fit and have experience of mountaineering. The trek will take you via extraordinary range of landscape and let you observe unique culture; cross pine and rhododendron forests; the terraced fields, Gurung people and the welcoming nature of Manage people.
Prior to Chulu East climbing peak following the path of the classic Annapurna Circuit, we go on to arrange a high camp on the south-west edge of Chulu East and we ascend through easy snow-slopes. Walking downward to Manang in the bottomless cleft of the Marsyangdi Valley, then we trek to Jomsom passing all the way through the arresting Tilicho Lake.

If you are looking for a peak that combines the legendary high-altitude trekking of the Annapurna Circuit with the raw thrill of mountaineering, Chulu East is your ultimate prize. Standing tall at 6,059m in the remote Manang region, Chulu East offers a unique advantage: it sits in the rain shadow of the Himalayas. This means while the rest of Nepal might be under clouds, Chulu often enjoys crisp, dry weather and endless horizons.

Chulu East Peak Climbing: Frequently Asked Questions

1. How difficult is Chulu East compared to Chulu West? Chulu East ($6,059m$) is often considered more technically straightforward than Chulu West, but it is physically more demanding due to its remote approach. While Chulu West has steeper vertical sections, Chulu East involves longer glacier walks and a more complex approach through the "Far East" ridge. Both are graded PD+ (Peu Difficile+), requiring basic mountaineering skills.

2. Can a beginner climb Chulu East? Yes, but with conditions. You don't need to be a professional climber, but you must be a fit trekker with a high tolerance for altitude. We provide a "Technical Training Day" at Base Camp where our guides teach you how to use crampons, ice axes, and fixed ropes. If you can hike 6–8 hours a day with a pack, you can climb Chulu East.

3. What is the best season for the Chulu East expedition? The "Peak Windows" are Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November). Because Chulu East sits in the Annapurna Rain Shadow, it remains drier than other regions. Autumn offers the most stable weather and the sharpest views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges.

4. Do I need to cross the Thorong La Pass to climb Chulu East? Our classic 19-day itinerary includes the Thorong La Pass ($5,416m$) after the summit. This allows you to complete the best part of the Annapurna Circuit. However, for those short on time, we can customize a "Direct Return" via Manang, though we recommend the full loop for better acclimatization.

5. What technical gear is required? You will need:

  • Double Mountaineering Boots (Crampon-compatible)

  • Ice Axe and Crampons

  • Climbing Harness and Helmet

  • Jumar (Ascender) and Descender (Figure 8)

  • Note: All technical gear can be rented in Kathmandu through Encounters Nepal for approximately $200–$300.

6. Is there a "Base Camp Join" option for non-climbers? Absolutely. This is a great way for friends to share the journey. Non-climbers can trek with the group to Chulu Base Camp ($4,500m$), enjoy the high-altitude scenery for 2–3 days, and then reunite with the climbers in Manang Village.

7. How do we stay safe from Altitude Sickness (AMS)? Our itinerary is "Altitude-First." We include rest days in Ngawal and Manang to ensure your body produces enough red blood cells. Our guides carry pulse oximeters to monitor your oxygen levels daily and are trained in emergency evacuation protocols.

8. What kind of insurance is mandatory? Your travel insurance must specifically cover "Mountaineering/Peak Climbing" up to 6,000 meters and include Emergency Helicopter Evacuation. Standard trekking insurance usually stops at 4,000m, which is insufficient for Chulu East.

9. What is the accommodation like during the trip? On the trek (Days 3–9 and 13–17), you will stay in Teahouses/Lodges with basic amenities. During the climbing phase (Base Camp and High Camp), we provide high-quality mountain tents, foam mattresses, and a full kitchen crew to prepare hot, high-calorie meals.

10. Do I need a permit for Chulu East? Yes. You need three specific documents:

  1. NMA Peak Climbing Permit (issued by the Nepal Mountaineering Association).

  2. ACAP Permit (Annapurna Conservation Area Project).

  3. TIMS Card (Trekkers' Information Management System).

Encounters Nepal handles all these permits as part of your booking package.
