Langtang Lirung Expedition

Langtang Valley situated directly north of Kathmandu in the Central Himalayan Region. This area was declared a National Park in 1976 and remains the second largest Park in Nepal, covering 1710 sq.km. Mountainous terrain south of Nepal-Tibet (China) border.

The Langtang National Park is also well known for its populations of red panda, Himalayan black bear, wild dog, Himalayan thar, ghoral (mountain antelope) and more than 250 species of birds.

Above the tree line, the valley opens up into a classical, glacial 'U' shape, bounded to the north by the impressive Langtang Himal, beyond which lies Tibet. The major peaks include Ghengu Liru(Langtang II 6571m/21,560ft), Langtang Lirung (7,425m/23,765ft) Kimshun (6,745m/22,137ft) and Shalbachum(6,918m/22,699ft) to the south, the Chimsedang Lekh forms a ridge of peaks which includes Naya-Kanga 5,846m and Gangchempo, Tilman's beautiful Fluted Peak. Beyond it extends to the Jugal Himal, terminating in Dorje Lakpa (6,980m/22,929ft). To the east the upper meadows of the Langtang end in a massive mountain wall, forming the frontier with Tibet.

Langtang remained unknown and mysterious until Bill Tilman's exploration in 1949, Following Tilman came Toni Hagen in 1952. Both ventured up the Langtang high valley and glacier, probing for routes into Tibet. Langtang at present is the third popular trekking area in Nepal after Annapurna and Everest region.

Langtang Lirung at 7,234m one of the great peaks within the Langtang Himal range, situated just 35km as the crow fly distance north of Kathmandu at 28 15 22 latitude and 85 31 10 longitude in the Bagmati Zone.

Within this range lies three peaks of Langtang I 6672m the mid peak, Langtang II or Ghenge Liru 6571m on the south left and the main high peak of them Langtang Lirung 7,234m on the north. The climb begins after a wonderful trek up to Kyangin Gompa in the Langtang Valley, from Kyangin the route to the Base Camp leads to the moraine and crossing one of the main source of Trisuli River as you reach the Base Camp after a 3-4 hours walk from Kyangin gompa. The climb is technical includes ice and rock climbing in most of the places till you reach the summit, with the grand view of the nearby peaks and a good close up view of the Tibetan plateau, as this range lies at the rim of the border of Tibet also.
