Upon arriving in Kathmandu for the first time in March 2012, I had booked a mountain flight with Encounters Nepal.com and had been most pleased with service provided by Rishi Nepal, Managing Director of the company. Being a secondary school teacher of many years' experience, I was also keen to see if it might be possible to teach in a school for a short period in Nepal at some point in the future.
Rishi kept in touch to help get things arranged when I returned to Australia and was able to organise for me to do some teaching across a range of classes over two weeks in September in a school in which he has an interest in Kathmandu.
At the end of September my son flew to Kathmandu to join me and we undertook a ten day trek, starting from Jomsom in the Annapurna region. Rishi accompanied us as our guide and employed a porter whom he often hires, a lovely man who was more saint than mere carrier of bags, to help carry our gear.
Rishi was highly attuned to our diverse needs as mother and adult son walkers and was most helpful in accommodating our needs so that we both enjoyed our trekking experience to the full. For example, my son ascended the 5500metre Thorung La Pass, starting out very early one morning with Buddhi, the porter while I spent that day with Rishi visiting the temples of the pilgrimage site of Muktinath and the monastery at Ranipowa, the nearby township.
The diverse mountain scenery along this route was stunning and our trekking experience was enhanced by the leisurely and friendly companionship of our guide and porter. The meals along the way were tasty, varied and sustaining and the accommodation in teahouses basic, yet interesting. There was always time to stop for refreshments when we needed them, which made the hiking very comfortable. Rishi is an experienced guide with great English and great wit, with a sense of humour that always gets you smiling or at least groaning! He also has a gentle and understanding way with his guests should any problems arise along the way.
I would highly recommend his company for any travel and trekking arrangements you may need to make during your stay in Nepal.
