Mt. Makalu at (8481m.) is the fifth highest mountain in the world & is geographically located on the Nepal-Tibet border; physically too, Makalu is situated just 22 km to the east of Everest & 80 km west of Mt. Kangchenjunga. This makes the area a potential vantage point for viewing Nepal’s major peaks which lie to the east of Everest. The trail takes you from the sweltering flatlands of Tumlingtar by the banks of the Arun River to one of the least trodden areas of Nepal; right into the base camp at 5000m, the foot of Mt. Makalu. This region is an area of some stunning natural beauty known worldwide for its diverse biological beauty & its unique flora & fauna; turning this zone into the heartlands of nature’s natural resources.
The routes we hike through in this area follows the lovely Barun river valley that falls in the Makalu Barun National Park, one of the prime highlights of trekking in this beautiful region. It is because of preserving the natural ecosystems of this area that kept this region closed to outsiders until 1952 when the famous explorer, Eric Shipton visited & crossed the pass, baptizing the pass with the name of Shipton La at {4220m) which reaches the foothills of the gigantic Makalu. The French became the first explorers to technically make the first climb on Makalu via its North West Ridge in 1955. Since that time, only a few hardened trekkers have ventured out to visit this high & wild region, leaving the territory in its unexplored virgin form due to its rugged isolation till date.
The vistas from the Base Camp of the south face of Makalu which also includes Everest & Lhotse are regally majestic & simply awesome from this point, & the Arun Valley is also known to be home to some of the world’s most rare species of birds which are only found hereabouts in Nepal.
Some well maintained climbing equipment & any lover of the wild who has done a few treks in the past & is in sound physical condition can do this pretty tough & taxing trek anytime in spring which is April through May or autumn from September to November, December is also possible but this could depend on the snowing conditions…anyways around, doing this trip could well be a lifetime achievement.
